1. Anxiety evidenced by hiding, or shying away when you reach out to pet her. Let her come to you at her own pace. Never chase her, or try to pull her out of hiding. Spend time sitting on the floor in her welcoming room and reading aloud to her to help her learn your voice and smell. Bring in a pillow, blanket and a good book. and lay on your side and read. Being down at her level makes you more approachable and less formidably tall.

2. Reduced appetite - be sure your cat is drinking fluids every day (litter box lumps are the best way to verify), and eating at least a few tablespoons of food. Offer small amounts of food. We think we are generous when we serve large amounts, but cats avoid "buffets" and are more likely to eat scanty amounts of food. Simply feed several times a day, removing the old food each time (compost it!), and refresh the water so it is cool and tasty.

3. Lack of interest in playing or cuddling. Bring in tempting toys and play with them yourself. Remove most toys when you leave so that your arrival presages "fun!"

4. Calling/ mewling - she is looking for her former companions, and/or letting you know of her sadness and distress. By all means spend time with her in her welcoming room, but be sure she remains there. She needs a secure area that she knows is safe in order to relax enough to attend to bonding with her new family and home.

5. Above all, be patient. Each cat takes a variable amount of time to settle in. This can be under a week for some cats, to well over a month for others.
